The truth is out there
They have a dark skin tone, so they might by default just be the enemy of someone that is pale. They are wary of their "allies", viewing them as chumps, and they are suspicious of others who try to integrate. They are not stupid. This last bit is actually somewhat of an impediment to unity since they can take a good willed white boy and misinform him. But in elementary school and middle school I don't remember people caring about race so much. Anime helped.
